Pindar launched Summer 2007

ImageState of the art Open 60 Juan K Design currently under construction for Pindar Ocean Racing.
Launched Summer 2007.

Mike Sanderson, recently named yachtsman of the year, is currently heading up the design and build of Pindar’s brand new state-of-the-art Open 60 racing yacht. The boat, to be built in TP Cookson’s yard in New Zealand, is due to come out of the shed in Summer 2007 and will be in the UK in time for the Fastnet Race. The competition schedule will also include The Transat Jacques Vabre double-handed transatlantic race from France to Brazil in Nov 2007 and the solo transatlantic race, the Transat.

This is the race that Mike competed in two years ago and despite having never competed alone before he finished in a creditable third place following gear failure that ended his battle for first place. The campaign, which is currently looking for partner sponsors, will produce one of the first of a new breed of Open 60’s, capable of breaking new boundaries, setting new records and winning races. Mike and the Pindar team have been collaborating with Juan Kouyoumdjian, otherwise known as ‘Juan K’, who designed the two ABN AMRO Volvo 70s.

Pindar, the leading British print and electronic media company, will team up with Volvo Ocean Race winner Mike Sanderson and cutting edge designer Juan Kouyoumdjian to build a new Open 60. The boat, which will be one of the first of a new breed of Open 60’s, will be capable of breaking new boundaries, setting new records and winning races.
A prominent supporter of international sailing, Pindar has sponsored Emma Richards, Sanderson’s wife, for the past eight years. Juan Kouyoumdjian, otherwise known as ‘Juan K’, designed the ABN AMRO Volvo 70 which Sanderson skippered to victory in the recent Volvo Ocean Race. Pindar will also be looking for co-sponsors to work with their ocean racing team on the new Open 60 project.

Andrew Pindar, Chairman of the Pindar Group commented: “We have been collaborating with Mike for some time now and he contributed a huge amount to making our previous yacht ‘Pindar AlphaGraphics’ (now ‘Artemis’) one of the fastest on the Open 60 circuit. As with previous projects, we are also actively looking for companies to come on board with us and be part of this fantastic programme. Not only do we have one of the world’s best sailors involved with the build, but in Juan K we have a world class naval architect who is renowned for being at the forefront of yacht design. We’ve been associated with some great boats in the past, but now, to have the chance to build a new boat, using the experience of Emma, Mike and Juan, with some of the best boat building talent in the world, is hugely exciting.”
“Who would have thought back in 1999 when we first chartered Pete Goss’ boat ‘Aqua Quorum’ for the Transat Jacques Vabre, that one day we would be building Pindar’s first brand new Open 60." Emma Richards

The new yacht will be built at TP Cookson’s yard in New Zealand, where Richards and Sanderson will be based throughout the winter.

Emma Richards commented: “Who would have thought back in 1999 when we first chartered Pete Goss’ boat ‘Aqua Quorum’ for the Transat Jacques Vabre, that one day we would be building Pindar’s first brand new Open 60. I am delighted that Mike and I will be working together to develop the next step in Pindar’s ocean racing campaign.”
Sanderson, who has worked with Pindar on several previous projects, will manage the programme from his home in Auckland: “I am really looking forward to working with Pindar and Juan on this new project. I am confident that together with the combined experience we have, we will come up with a winning formula.”
The new Pindar Open 60 is due out of the shed during Summer 2007, just in time for the Fastnet Race. It is intended to enter into various record attempts before competing in the Transat Jacques Vabre.
